RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta celebrated 40 years on air on Monday 2 April.  The national Irish-language station came on air for the first time at 3pm on Easter Sunday 1972, becoming the second legal radio station in the state.
The station was established as a result of a campaign by the Gaeltacht Civil Rights Movement, who had successfully set up pirate radio station Saor Raidió Chonamara in 1970, resulting in a government announcement later that year that Raidió na Gaeltachta was to be set up.
The service started with 7 broadcasters, and initially broadcast for just over 2 hours a day to Gaeltacht areas.  From small beginnings its broadcasting hours grew little by little, as did the range of programmes, with Raidió na Gaeltachta today broadcasting 24/7 nationally and across the world via satellite and online.   The station HQ is in Casla in Connemara, with smaller stations in Corca Dhuibhne in Kerry and in Gaoth Dobhair in Donegal, as well as staff in Donnybrook. News and current affairs, including the regional news service, form the backbone of the service, which has contributors throughout the world.  Raidió na Gaeltachta has also played an important role in the development of traditional music, and sean-nós singing in particular, which continue to have a central place in its schedule.  Sport is also an important part of the programming, Gaelic games in particular.
The concert, Ceolchoirm Cheiliúrtha 40 Bliain RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, takes place at 8pm on Thursday 19 April.
