Shannonside Winter Music Weekend

January 17th–20th, 2013

One of the first festivals of the year, the Shannonside Winter Music Weekend in Sixmilebridge starts the year of the Gathering bringing the international home. Brendan Walsh returns from Switzerland to his home territory with his wonderful Diversus Guitar Ensemble, while all the way from Stockholm comes Kieran O’Loughlin to play his traditional and folk tunes and songs.

The case for getting back to the Bridge is strengthened on Saturday 19th with a very special offer for expatriates at the Folk Park in Bunratty, where 21 blues, bluegrass, Cajun, classical and traditional gigs make for an extraordinary day out.

Celtic Connections 2013 runs from Thursday January 17th – Sunday February 3rd and comprises a wealth of concerts, ceilidhs, talks, workshops, free events and late night sessions taking place over 18 days in various venues across Glasgow.

Various venues across Glasgow are utilised for Celtic Connections 2013 such as the Main Auditorium in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, O2 ABC, The Tron, Òran Mór, The Arches, The Mitchell Theatre, City Halls, Kelvingrove, The Barrowland Ballroom, St Andrews in the Square and festival fans’ favourite the Old Fruitmarket will all play host to Celtic Connections events.

Toes will be tapping all the way to Killarney for the 14th  Gathering Traditional Festival which is set to take place at The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney from February 20th – 24th, 2013.

This festival is firmly established as one of the most popular celebrations of Irish song and dance the world over. It has grown in strength since its inception way back in 1999 and incorporates a finely tuned mix of concerts, céilís, dance workshops, instrument masterclasses, a musical tour to Sliabh Luachra, showcase gigs and storytelling which is new to the 2013 programme. Other highlights include the Schools Outreach Music Programme and a session on the Lakes of Killarney aboard the Pride of the Lakes Waterbus. The stellar line–up of concerts include performances with Dervish, We Banjo 3, Mairead Ní Chathasaigh, Chris Newman, Arty McGlynn & Nollaig Casey, Tim Edey & Brendan Power, Micheal & MacDara O’Raghallaigh along with Catherine McEvoy. The programme also includes The Generations Concert of Sliabh Luachra including musicians Billy Clifford, Bryan O’Leary, Gearoid Dineen, Niamh Dalton and Mick, Michelle & Louise Mulcahy.

Feile an Neidín

April 5th – 7th, 2013

Following the huge success playing host to two Munster Fleadh’s, the town of Kenmare, Co. Kerry has decided to start it’s own annual Kenmare Irish Music Festival, Feile an Neidín. Touted by many since the 2008/10 Munster Fleadh’s as the ideal events setting, Kenmare will hold the festival on the weekend after Easter every year, the inaugural festival being April 5th, 6th and 7th, 2013. The launch festival coincides with the year of The Gathering and running with the theme of Return to the Nest hopes to draw people from all over the country, and indeed the world, back to An Neidín (the little nest!).
The weekend will see many well–known players acting as core musicians at sessions in the numerous venues during the whole of the weekend, also workshops for all instruments, story– telling for kids, Kenmare Bay boat trip sessions, two big name headline acts in the Arts Centre and a big Céilí with the famous Kilfenora Céilí Band!

Kenmare is very excited about this and would love you all to come….. PUT IT IN YOUR DIARY!!!!!

2013 will be the 10th edition Meitheal Summer School. It will run from July 22nd – 26th in Villiers School, Limerick (ie. Just after the Munster Fleádh). A stellar cohort of tutors is being lined–up. Reaction to Meitheal 2012 was extremely positive and many students highlight the Finale Concert, and the Meitheal Orchestra show with Beoga in the Dome, Cavan being unforgettable experiences.

Milwaukee Irish Fest will present a special holiday concert featuring local Irish band, Tallymoore on December 15th, 2012 at 8 pm at the Irish Fest Center, located at 1532 Wauwatosa Avenue in Milwaukee, Wis. The event will bring the Celtic Christmas spirit to life while benefiting the Wauwatosa Food Pantry. “Irish culture has many unique traditions – and that includes holiday tunes,” said Barry Stapleton, director of the Ward Irish Music Archives at the Irish Fest Center. “The Tallymoore Christmas Concert is another example of how we continue to share the Irish experience with the Milwaukee community.”
