Pride of the West

New album from John Wynne and John McEvoy
Traditional Irish Flute and Fiddle Music in the North Connaught Style

‘Pride of The West’ is a new album released on the Cló-Iar Chonnachta label during Summer 2007. It’s a 13 track, vibrant, dynamic CD, with fiddler John McEvoy and flute player John Wynne brewing a flute/fiddle storm. The musicians are ably supported by the talents of Arty McGlynn on guitars and Paddy McEvoy on piano. The tunes played are mainly from the Sligo/Roscommon repertoire, with unusual local versions of tunes, along with a couple of new compositions thrown into the mix!

Both players have strong Co. Roscommon roots. They both have a huge interest in the flute/fiddle playing of that region and are both experienced musicians with previous extensive recording and touring careers.

John McEvoy released a solo CD; ‘Returning’ in 1998. He recorded and performed with the group Bakerswell and has toured with Providence. He also recorded a critically acclaimed album,’ The Kilmore Fancy’(2004), in duet with his flute playing sister, Catherine McEvoy.

John Wynne released his solo album ‘With Every Breath’ in 2000. He was a founding member of Providence, with whom he toured extensively. He also played on ‘Providence’ (1999) and the album ‘A Fig for a Kiss’ (2001) with the group.

These two musicians have been performing together during the earlier months of 2007 to great reaction. There are a number of CD launches and concert appearances lined up for the rest of 2007. Hope to see you along the way……

Recent reviews;
Regional accents are alive and thriving on this collection on north Connaught tunes. Roscommon flute player John Wynne and Birmingham-born fiddler John McEvoy make sprightly, uncluttered music: filigree playing that stitches the two instruments together seamlessly. IRISH TIMES

As duets go; it’s hard to beat the classic combination of flute and fiddle- and no better men than John Wynne and John McEvoy to show us why. Throughout, the playing is lively and clean, with appropriately understated backing by Arty McGlynn on guitar and McEvoy’s son Paddy on piano. HOT PRESS.
