TRADITIONAL SINGING WEEKEND IN SEPTEMBER

Web: http://homepage.eircom.net/~tradsing
Exciting times are ahead for Sligo Traditional Singing Circle because, with the kind assistance from both The Arts Council and Sligo Arts, they will host a weekend of traditional singing in Sligo from the 28th to the 30th of September of this year.

Plans are already at an advanced stage, with some of the best and most entertaining traditional singers already booked to attend. Two guests already booked this year are Rosie Stewart and Sean Mone. There will be other noted guests also.

For traditional singers, these two artists need no introduction. Rosie Stewart is one of the most respected singers and authority on singing on this Island. She has been the recipient of the TG4 Gradam Cheoil award. Sean Mone is a respected singer and composer and is always a popular guest wherever singers gather. There will be lectures by Bairbre Ní Fhloinn and Vince Hearns.

This is the inaugural Sligo Singers Festival and it will be a weekend of singing workshops, informal singing sessions, audio and video presentations, scholarly talks and a field trip. All events will take place in Sligo Town this year.

Sligo Traditional Singing Circle is in existence for many years now. They meet at least once a month to sing traditional songs and enjoy themselves generally in a relaxed and friendly setting. No better place to meet than in Durkin’s bar in Ballinacarrow, Co. Sligo where most of the sessions take place.

The purpose of the Singing Circle is to nurture and promote the art of traditional singing in Sligo and its surrounding areas. Traditional singing is unaccompanied and the songs would have a decidedly Gaelic influence in their shaping and making. Songs are sung in both the English and Irish language. However, all are welcome to listen and learn. More details to follow in the coming months.
