Glasgow’s Irish traditional music new year is welcomed in with the 8th Jimmy McHugh Memorial Weekend. It always promises something special both on stage and in the sessions which happen on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons and for most of Saturday night. This year’s headliners are two of New York’s finest exponents of the tradition in Brian Conway and Felix Doran. The concert will also feature Micheal O’Raghallaigh (concertina, Co Meath), Allan MacDonald (bagpipes/singer, Scotland), Maggie Boyle (Singer, London), with more headliners to be confirmed. Also attending to this year’s concert are Eileen o’ Brien, Deirdre Mc Sherry, Denis Ryan, The Kinsella Family and many more.

The small scale and intimate festival has become a major event in the trad lovers calendar. Each January sees many musicians coming to Glasgow for the music and of course to pay respect to the memory of the great fiddler and composer, Jimmy McHugh. Many folks also slip away to shop at the January sales in trhe Buchanan Centre, and some catch a bargain in a talked about but hard to track down CD (Alan O’ Leary of Copperplate Distribution comes up from London with a table full of goodies each year to whet the trad music fans’ appetites).

Accommodation is available at a festival rate so visitors are now recommended to contact the festival at the numbers below to ensure getting the reduced rate. In previous years, the sessions have gone on all night with many musicians dropping by. All in all a great weekend in a great city for a great cause.
