BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB FOR SLIGO LIVE

The legends of Cuban music, Buena Vista Social Club, will headline the Sligo Live festival this October Bank Holiday weekend. Their 1997 album sold in excess of 5 million copies, placing them among the world’s best known roots performers. The film of the same name was nominated for an Oscar and the group went on to share their infectious rhythms and sunny joyous Caribbean sounds with adoring audiences all over the world.

CELEBRATIONS OF IRISH ARTS AND CULTURE AT VENUES ACROSS LEEDS

It’s taken some time to establish but students can now apply to do the first year of the BA in Music & Dance from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick in The Shaylyn Centre, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim. This first year is equivalent to a FETAC Level 6 Diploma. Importantly the course is also an Access Programme that will allow qualifying students apply to join in at the second year of the BA, Degree in Limerick.

TOMMY MAKEM (RIP)

Tommy Makem one of the giants of the folk revival passed away on
Wednesday August 1st 2007.

His work with the Clancy Brothers in the 1950s and 60’s was truly historic,
capturing the zeitgeist of the emerging folk revival of which that band was
in the van, his subsequent career, his many recording and his live
appearances established his name and his music in the hearts of
generations of Irish music fans, particularly in the USA where he was
based for many years.
