THE JOE MOONEY SUMMER SCHOOL 2008

The 20th. Joe Mooney Summer School will run from 19th. –26th. July 2008 in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim.

A full programme of traditional workshops is planned for this well-established week on the traditional calendar of events 2008.

Workshops in flute, fiddle, button accordion, concertina, whistle, harp, banjo,
uilleann pipes, mandolin, bodhrán, piano accordion, traditional and sean nós singing and set dancing.

Set dancers are well catered for, with daily workshops by Ireland’s most sought after set dancing maestro - Pat Murphy. Pat has been a tutor at The Joe Mooney Summer School since he took over from the great Connie Ryan. In the afternoons, there are further workshops, 2 hand dances, steps for sets and
sean-nós. Throughout the week top class bands provide music for set dancing céilis nightly, Annaly Céili Band, Michael Sexton & Pat Walsh, Copperplate, Swallows Tail, Davey Céili Band, and The Glenside playing an afternoon session and a Slán Abhaile Céili.

The evening events commence with opening concert in Ramada Hotel on Sunday evening July 20th. On Monday night July 21st. the fiddle recital will feature local fiddlers, fiddle tutors and special guests. Tuesday night is youth recital night - an amazing performance by talented young people from Ireland and abroad. On Wednesday night, July 23rd. the flute and whistle recital will be an exciting event with the launch of the 2nd. CD from The Roscommon Flute Players. The Grand Traditional Concert on Thursday night, July 24th. at 8.00 pm attracts a huge traditional audience from all surrounding counties and farther afield, who come to hear their all-time favourites - Joe & Ann Burke, Noel Hill, Rosie Stewart, Neilidh Mulligan - the list is endless.

Having introduced the Summer School BBQ at The Ramada Hotel in 2005, it has become hugely popular with young and old in the beautiful surrounds of the Ramada Hotel on the shores of Lough Allen.
