Pavilion: The Municipal Theatre for Dún Laoghaire - Rathdown today announced the second tradition:DL, Dun Laoghaire’s Festival of Traditional Music for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Revealing the exciting line-up, Pavilion’s Director Martin Murphy said: “We’re delighted that Festival Curator Toner Quinn has again come up with an inspirational selection of performers, from the simple virtuoso solo fiddle of Paddy Glackin, to The Frost Is All Over: a unique collaboration of Tony Mc Mahon’s accordion and Dermot Bolger’s words, along side international traditional artists of the calibre of Spiers and Boden, and Julie Fowlis.”

As last year, for the real Tradition:DL experience, the audience can head across the road from the theatre for a chance to hear and play with some of the top musicians around in the five free “Gastropub Sessions”. Martin Murphy said: “Put it in your diary. Dun Laoghaire is the place for all traditional music lovers to be this August 1st - 3rd. August Bank Holiday is Traditional Music weekend here in Pavilion Theatre.”

PADDY GLACKIN (fiddle)
One of Ireland’s greatest traditional fiddle players, Paddy Glackin is from Dublin with strong links to County Donegal. An exquisite interpreter of traditional music repertoire, be it slow airs or Donegal reels, his eponymous debut album is still regarded as a classic. Paddy has recorded seminal albums with Paddy Keenan, Mícheál Ó Domhnaill and Dónal Lunny, and was the very first fiddle player in the groundbreaking Bothy Band. Performing solo in Tradition:DL, this is a rare treat, not to be missed.

SPIERS & BODEN

John Spiers (melodeon/concertina) and Jon Boden (vocals/fiddle)

Described by The Guardian as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, Spiers and Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground. Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music which are as much at home on the main stage of Cambridge Folk Festival as they are in a lock-in at the local pub.

Michelle Mulcahy (harp) with John Blake (guitar)

Undoubtedly one of the decade’s most gifted and exciting young traditional musicians, Michelle Mulcahy was an outstanding soloist in Bill Whelan’s latest CD, The Connemara Suite. Her debut album, Notes from the Heart, recorded with her sister and father, has received acclaim worldwide. Michelle not only plays harp, but is also an exceptional fiddle and concertina player. She is joined by one of the leading accompanists on the traditional music scene, John Blake.

Julie Fowlis (Scottish traditional song) and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Irish traditional song)
With Éamon Doorley (bouzouki) and Ross Martin (guitar)

Coming together to complete our weekend is the thrilling duet of Julie Fowlis from Scotland (BBC Radio 2 2008 Singer of the Year) and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from Ireland, lead singer of the award-winning group group Danú. Julie gives Gaelic song a thrillingly contemporary makeover while remaining true to her North Uist tradition – from haunting Jacobean ballads to “port a’ beul”. Muireann’s unique voice, and her work as a soloist and with Danu, has set her apart in Irish traditional music and established her as one of the leading singers of her generation. About to release an album together, these two outstanding singers will bring together in an amazing evening the link between Irish and Gaedhlig music and language.
