BOOK LAUNCH OF NEW COMPOSITIONS BY MARTIN POWER

On Friday, May 8th, the Niall Ó Cathasaigh branch of Comhaltas in Cork gathered to celebrate the launch of Martin Power’s first collection of original tunes. Martin is a renowned musician, composer, teacher and arranger who has made a remarkable contribution to the traditional music scene in many parts of his native county Cork.

WILLIAM KENNEDY PIPING FESTIVAL 2009

The Armagh Pipers Club is delighted to announce details of the 16th William Kennedy Piping Festival which will take place in Armagh from the 12th to15th November. Highlights include a special concert with Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and friends, which will feature recently-composed and arranged work for piano, uilleann pipes and orchestra, and the Armagh debut for Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny’s supergroup Mozaik.

JIMMY CROWLEY ON STAGE

Balladeer, raconteur and lifelong song collector Jimmy Crowley has an extensive tour of Ireland lined-up for August with a short break in the middle of the month for a trip to the Irish Fest in Milwaukee. Jimmy will present a special one man show at the Firkin Crane in Cork on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout August. This theatrical show looks at the songs and characters from the streets of Cork. We also hear that Jimmy is due to release a number of albums in the US in autumn.

AN EDGE ON EDUCATION

Music Network is to manage a major philanthropic gift for music education in Ireland. €5 million has been donated by U2 and a further €2 million pledged by The Ireland Funds to allow a national system of music education provision to be rolled out between 2010 and 2015. Music Network will administer the scheme, which will be rolled out on a phased basis, in a number of new locations each year, beginning in 2010 and including all musical genres.

The wait is over and the line-up for the 2009 Masters of Tradition Festival has finally been announced. The Masters of Tradition Festival takes place in Bantry, West Cork from 12 – 16 August and booking is now open.

As ever the Festival is headlined by Martin Hayes, the fiddler from East Clare, whose distinctive touch and extravagant virtuosity has brought the tradition to new levels. His famous trance-evoking sets with Dennis Cahill have mesmerised audiences all over the world. So the five days of music-making will be opened and closed by the resident master.

TEMPLE BAR TRADFEST REPRESENTS IRELAND AT INTERCELTIQUE FESTIVAL IN FRANCE

TASCQ in association with Diageo Ireland and with support from Failte Ireland and Culture Ireland are taking Temple Bar TradFest, Dublin’s premiere celebration of traditional music and culture to the world’s largest Inter-celtic Festival in Lorient, France. Running from 31st July -9th August the Interceltique Festival (founded in 1969) is one of the world’s largest gathering of Celtic cultures. Musicians travel from Ireland Scotland, Wales, France, Spain and as far away as Australia to play in the 10 day festival. The festival programme is awash with activity from spectacular pipe band performances, festival concerts, singing and dancing workshops and much more.
