‘DO BHÍOSA LÁ I bPORTLÁIRGE’, EXPLORING THE MUSIC OF THE SOUTH EAST, WITH UILLEANN PIPER
DAVID POWER, FLUTE PLAYER CIARAN SOMERS AND FIDDLER FIONN MAC GIOLLA
CHUDA, FROM 19 – 28 MAY 2010

“David Power brings a breathtaking freshness to the set, his fluid,
fluent playing as light as a feather.”
- Siobhan Long, Irish Times

Music Network’s May traditional Irish tour, Do Bhíosa Lá i bPortláirge
sees uilleann piper David Power, flute player Ciarán Somers and fiddler
Fionn Mac Goilla Chuda explore the music of the South East. Join them
from 19 – 28 May as they unearth a veritable treasure trove of music
with its origins in the Co. Waterford Gaeltacht and the surrounding
region. Music Network tours provide a wonderful opportunity to see some
of the world’s foremost musicians at affordable prices in venues around
Ireland, and are presented in association with The Irish Times and RTÉ
lyric fm.  Music Network is funded by the Arts Council. Further
information from (01) 671 9429 or www.musicnetwork.ie.

The title of this traditional Irish tour, which means “I spent a day in
Waterford”, is the first line of a song once heard in national schools
across the country. Could its catchy melody be influenced by the sunny
local climate? Find out as this tour explores music with its origins in
the Co. Waterford Gaeltacht and the surrounding region. Leading the
charge is virtuoso uilleann piper David Power, former All-Ireland winner
and a member of Liam Clancy’s Fairweather Band in the early 90s. In
recent years, he has recorded two highly-acclaimed solo CDs as well as
performing alongside such trad giants as Tony Mac Mahon and Máirtín
O’Connor.

Joining David is flute player Ciarán Somers, a native of Mhuine Bheag,
Co. Carlow, who is noted for his musical links with Brittany: his recent
CD Faoi Bhláth was recorded there with fiddler Dave Sheridan and Breton
guitarist Nicolas Quemener, formerly of Arcady.

Dubliner Fionn Mac Goillachuda first fell in love with trad music in An
Rinn, Co. Waterford, and later returned there to record two CDs with
local musicians. In addition to numerous TV and radio appearances he has
toured in Japan and across Europe in the distinguished company of The
Helvick Heads, Dónal Clancy and Gorumna.
