on FRIDAY, 21ST MAY 2010

DERVISH CELEBRATE 21 YEARS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WITH THE RELEASE OF THEIR NEW LIVE ALBUM & DVD ON FRIDAY, 21ST MAY 2010. DERVISH GO GLOBAL DIGITALLY WHEN THEY RETURN TO THEIR SLIGO ROOTS TO PLAY A TRAD SESSION WHICH WILL BE STREAMED LIVE ON-LINE GLOBALLY.

On Friday, 21st May DERVISH release their 11th Album entitled ‘FROM STAGE TO STAGE’ to celebrate 21 years together. It all started 21 years ago to the day. On the 21st May 1989 DERVISH released their first album. Now 21 years later fans of trad super-group DERVISH are in for a real treat on Friday May 21st at 9.30 pm (Irish time) when the band will gather at renowned Hargadons Pub in Sligo to play a rousing traditional Irish music session to launch their new Live Album “FROM STAGE TO STAGE”. The new album contains a Special Live DVD of DERVISH which was recorded at the RTE studios in Dublin.

The Sligo based six piece, who celebrate 21 years in the music industry this year, launch their new live album which features live tracks from Sebastopol festival in California and at the Sligo Live festival in Ireland. ‘FROM STAGE TO STAGE’ includes guest appearances by Duke Special, Ron Sexsmith, Vasen, Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill and bluegrass mandolin virtuoso Mike Marshall. This Live Album contains material from Dervish’s extensive back catalogue and features a new song “Gold in them Hills”, written by and featuring Ron Sexsmith.

Dervish remain one of Ireland’s most sought after festival acts internationally and this year they have taken their 21st Anniversary celebrations to festivals around the world including return trips to high profile events such as Celtic Connections and the legendary Cambridge Folk festival. Hence the demand for the band is so high that due to overlapping schedules they unfortunately had to turn down an offer to perform at the 40th anniversary of the Glastonbury festival due to a prior engagement at a festival in France.

Co-founder and accordion player Shane Mitchell says ‘it’s amazing, here we are 21 years later still doing what we love and the offers to perform all over the world are still coming in. We feel privileged to be playing our native music alongside other world music acts.

DERVISH, whose members include Cathy Jordan, Liam Kelly, Shane Mitchell, Brian McDonagh, Tom Morrow and Michael Holmes, have performed in every corner of the globe, whether before heads of state or to an audience of 240,000 people in Rio de Janeiro at the World’s biggest Festival, Rock In Rio. They have shared the stage with world stars and have chronicled their musical journey in 10 CDs and 2 DVDs. Over the years they have received many awards, but their proudest moment has to be when Sligo City Council bestowed upon them the Freedom of the City of Sligo for their contribution to the region’s fibrand artistic culture.

A DERVISH performance ranges from powerful and energetic dance tunes to sublime interpretations of Irish songs and airs with vocals, fiddle, flute, accordion, bodhran, mandola and bouzouki. Interwoven with Cathy Jordan’s beguiling voice and engaging stage presence, an evening with DERVISH is filled with enough warmth, conviviality and inspiration.

On Friday 21st May at 9.30 pm (Irish time) DERVISH will gather at renowned Hargadons Pub in Sligo to play a rousing traditional Irish music session to launch their new Live Album “FROM STAGE TO STAGE”. “We are all set for a great night and you never know who might drop in!” says Cathy Jordan of DERVISH. This is only a taster for the official party at Sligo Live in October” the singer concluded. On-line viewers will be able to interact with Dervish and they may even be lucky enough to get the musicians to play their favourite Dervish tune.
