NEW Cavan Music Summer shows for tourists

Comhaltas Seisiún Show is hosted every summer on the Tuesday & Wednesday nights of July and August. The show starts at 8pm in Ballyjamesduff and 9 pm in Farnham Arms Hotel.
With a cast of over 30 artists of all ages, and a non-stop performance of wild Cavan music, song and dance. Tea, coffee and locally-made treats can be got in the Museum /Hotel before the show. All welcome to sing, play or dance. A memorable night and a genuine Cavan welcome to all.

U2 AND THE IRELAND FUND ANNOUNCE CHAIR, PROJECT DIRECTOR AND BOARD OF NATIONAL MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Details of this major music education scheme were announced at the Ireland Fund’s 35th Anniversary Celebration in New York. Dr Tony O’ Dalaigh will Chair the board and Rosaleen Molloy will act as Project Director with responsibility for rolling out the programme nationally.

In Ceoláras Coleman, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, the ‘Summer Seisiún’ makes a welcome return, commencing on the first week in July. The twice weekly seisiún are held on Wednesday & Saturday nights at 9pm. Ceoltóirí Coleman will again provide the music, song and dancing. As in former years, audience participation is encouraged and facilitated. COMHALTAS CEOLTÓIRÍ ÉIREANN

The Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2010 - Fiddle

This is a worldwide competition run during the course of each year. This mirrors a similar competition held on Radio Eireann in a program called Fleadh Cheoil an Radio which was presented and conceived by the late Sean Ó Riada, Peadar’s father during the early 1960’s. This year, 2010, is the year of the fiddle. Anyone can enter from anywhere in the world. The competition is to award the Sean Ó Riada Gold Medal to the most complete Irish traditional fiddler who has competed. All entrants are free. Entry is via the Internet to the site Cuireadh Chun Ceoil.

WHEN DONEGAL CAME TO MEETING HOUSE SQUARE

SLIABH LUACHRA FLUTE PIONEER HONOURED

One of Irish music’s true gentleman Billy Clifford was presented with the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Gradam at Ballykisteen Hotel during the start of the Tipperary Fleadh. Billy who has lived in the premier county for four decades made two of the classic Topic albums of Sliabh Luachra music over forty years ago. Billy is the son of the late John and Julia Clifford, his mother was the sister of Dennis Murphy. Their Julia, John & Billy Clifford - The Star of Munster Trio (Topic - 12TS310 - 1977) was recorded between 1964 and around a single microphone in Eric and Lucy Farr’s kitchen. Billy was joined on stage by his son Dennis who played his uncle Dennis’ fiddle. Billy is due to release a CD in late summer.

AWARDS FOR TRADITIONAL MUSIC VETERANS

Dinny McLaughlin, of Cockhill, Buncrana was awarded the International Fund for Ireland’s Intergenerational “Pass It on” Award in May. The award recognises the recipients passing on the music or dance tradition and Dinny has done both over the years. The strength of his work can be measured by the fact that there are now many dancing and fiddle teachers in Innishowen who got their early education from Dinny.
