The Bann for Marie Curie Cancer Care

The Wild Duck Portglenone is the venue for the 2011 “Wee GigN The Bann” on Saturday 16th April at 8.30pm. This year’s concert features a star studded line up which will be a must for music lovers of all tastes with all proceeds form the night being donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Friday 8 April was the second national music day, with free live music events all over the country, and as part of the day RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta organised and broadcast a live concert – Féasta Ceoil an Earraigh – from The Forge in Moycullen, Co. Galway featuring some of the west’s most talented musicians and singers.

Limerick ladies win Siansa Gael Linn 2011 final!

The young traditional music group ‘Éile’ from  Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ, Limerick are celebrating today following their win at the Siansa Gael Linn Grand Finale in the National Concert Hall on Sunday last, 10 April 2011.  Celebrating ten years since it’s inception, Siansa is now one of the country’s most prestitious competitions for young traditional Irish music and singing groups. Organised by Gael Linn, and supported by Foras na Gaeilge, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and Irish Music Magazine, it is a unique fusion of the Irish language, Irish music and young people.

Bill Whelan and Brendan Graham first inductees to new IMRO Academy

Bill Whelan, best known as the composer of Riverdance and Brendan Graham the co-author of the hugely successful song, ‘You Raise Me Up’ became the first inductees to the new IMRO Academy which was launched by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) this week.
The IMRO Academy’s mission is to celebrate and mark the successes of Ireland’s iconic songwriters and composers who have made a very significant cultural and social impact in Ireland and/or internationally. Two IMRO members will be inducted into the Academy each year.
Victor Finn, CEO, IMRO, said:  “Both Bill and Brendan have contributed enormously to the recognition of Ireland across the Globe and their extensive work more than merits them being inducted into the new IMRO Academy.”

Music Network presents some of the finest musicians on this country’s contemporary trad scene together with Swedish counterpart Olov Johansson. Johansson, the first world champion of the traditional Swedish nyckelharpa or “key harp” and a founder member of Grammy award-winning Swedish group Väsen will be joined by renowned singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gerry O’Beirne, fiddler Tom Morrow (a member of supergroup Dervish) and flute player Conor Byrne who has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in Irish music. This exploration of old and new music from Ireland and Sweden has all the makings of a sensational tour.
