Knockanean Starlings make beautiful music

www.knockaneannationalschool.com
The latest fundraising project from Knockanean National School in the parish of Doora-Barefield, Co Clare is the launch of their CD titled “Starlings”. This is described as “A fledgling flight of music from our school musicians & special friends”. Knockanean have a long and wonderful musical tradition led by their inspiring music teacher, Joan McNamara. 15 years ago Joan set up the Music Club and invited all children who wish to play music & learn new tunes to come together once a week during lunch breaks. This developed into their annual Band Spectacular which they take part in, along with 3 other primary schools, in venues such as Thomond Park, Bunratty Folk Park & Shannon Airport.

The music club has been so successful, that over 100 children ranging from age 7 - 13 took part in the recording, including some past pupils who were delighted to come back and be part of this exciting project. Some of Clare’s leading musicians such as Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford, Manus Maguire, Kate Purcell and Blackie O’Connell generously gave their time and music to provide the children with an unforgettable opportunity to perform and record with them. They were also joined by talented parents Monica Kearney, Murty Ryan, Caroline O’Connor & Fèlim Ò Coileàin. The music is a mixture of traditional Irish and Shetland tunes and songs, and some more contemporary pieces. Definitely something to suit all tastes.

The CD was launched on Sunday 8th May at 7pm in Cois na hAbhna. The concert featured the young musicians and singers of Knockanean School, joined by some of their special guests performing pieces from the recording.

The CD is on sale in Custy’s www.custysmusic.com and The Irish Shop www.theirishshop.com and from the school by contacting 083 1119470. All proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to the Knockanean School Building Fund.
