Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann’s (CCÉ) 39th annual Scoil Éigse takes place in Cavan Town from 14th – 19th August 2011, the week proceeding Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Scoil Éigse, CCÉ’s annual international summer school, plays a very important part in educating, nurturing and encouraging Irish cultural traditions. Scoil Éigse is open to students and the general public alike.

Scoil Éigse, which has proceeded Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann since 1972, is the most comprehensive course of its kind. The focal point of Scoil Éigse is the classes in traditional Irish music song and dance which take place on a daily basis.

Other Scoil Éigse activities include Fonn Seisiúin and Club Éisge and all contribute to immerse people in Irish culture while also learning some basic musical skills. Students are placed in appropriately graded instrumental music classes.

The team of artists and educationalists who reflect Comhaltas commitment to education are all master performers with proven track-records as teachers, musician. These tutors have a wealth of artistic experience and knowledge, which they share with students in an atmosphere that promotes both active and reflective participation.

Each night up to four hundred young musicians gather to play together, with their tutors at Club Éigse reflecting the session environment. This year it celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Comhaltas with a commemorative open-air performance in Cavan town by the students and tutors of Scoil Éigse on Wednesday 17th August. The school ends with the ‘Scoil Éigse Concert’ on Friday morning at 10:15am.

From its inception, Scoil Éigse promoted quality teaching of quality material in a family/youth-friendly cultural immersion setting and as a result it gained in popularity with last year’s event attracting over 800 students.  This year’s school is expected to attract even more interest, as the Fleadh Cheoil gears up for its largest event ever as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the organisation.
