The Times

Fabulous Beast Artistic Director, Michael Keegan-Dolan and Liam Ó Maonlaí, founding member of Hothouse Flowers, come together to create a new production that takes its title from Ó Maonlaí’s 2005 solo album Rian.
This production will feature live on stage performances from musicians Liam Ó Maonlaí, Cormac Begley, Martin Brunsden, Eithne Ní Chatháin and Maitiú Ó Casaide and dancers Anna Kaszuba, Saku Koistinen, Louise Mochia, Emmanuel Obeya, Keir Patrick, Ino Riga and Louise Tanoto.

Three times Olivier Award-nominated choreographer Keegan-Dolan creates a production with Ó Maonlaí in which the musicians and dancers share the stage equally. Renowned musician Ó Maonlaí combines material from his album Rian with the music of influential Irish composer Seán Ó Riada, who has been a primary influence on Ó Maonlaí’s work.
.
Rian sees seven dancers from around the world and six of Ireland’s top musicians unite with Ó Maonlaí and Keegan-Dolan to create an expressive cultural hybrid. Rian taps into healthy life enhancing traditions with influences from faraway places to evoke a timeless vision of the real indescribable nature of things.

Liam Ó Maonlaí is best known as a founding member of Hothouse Flowers who formed in 1985 and have been producing music consistently ever since, playing Glastonbury Festival this year (2011). More recently Liam has been working on solo projects, his debut solo album Rian was released in 2005 and mixes Irish music with music from all over the world. In July 2011 Ó Maonlaí received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fiddler’s Green International Festival.

Fabulous Beast is led by director and choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan. Known for their unique style which blends narrative and physical theatre, dance, speech and song, Fabulous Beast has received great critical acclaim for several ground-breaking and controversial productions including Giselle and The Bull, both of which have been nominated for Oliver Awards.

The company’s most recent work includes a critically acclaimed new staging of Stravinsky’s masterpiece The Rite of Spring, a Fabulous Beast co-production with English National Opera, which played at the London Coliseum in November 2009 and was also nominated for an Olivier Award.
