This collection of female vocalists singing Irish songs of love is drawn from the rich Gael Linn archive. These beautiful  recordings have been unavailable for some time and some are presented here for the first time. The recordings were made from the 1960s to the 1980s, by artists ranging from Máire Ní Scolaí to Mary O’Hara. This album showcases a rich tradition of  Irish song which deserves to be celebrated.

The singers featured were not from the native tradition of singing but each with their distinctive style succeeded in bringing an Irish song repertoire to a wide music audience. Many of the singers took part in Cabaret Gael Linn, a group of popular entertainers who performed throughout Ireland in the 1960s.

Songs of Love presents different facets of love -: from romantic love, to maternal love, to love of country. The collection features a variety of  songs, ranging from the ‘big’ songs of the tradition, such as ‘An Draighneán Donn’ and ‘Róisín Dubh’,  to gentle lullabies.

It is hoped that this album will re-awaken an interest in, and an appreciation of, the beauty  that lies in this evocative Irish singing tradition.
