Cootehill all set for 8th Gerry Whelan Memorial Weekend

Cootehill, County Cavan is again looking forward to an event–packed weekend of traditional music, song and dance as the eight annual Gerry Whelan Memorial Weekend fast approaches. The popular annual festival, which will see some of the top names in the tradition taking part in the memorial concert, pub sessions, workshops and street music pays tribute to the late Gerry Whelan, who was actively involved with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann since the organisation was founded in 1951.

Among the many top–class artists entertaining the crowds at the Gerry Whelan weekend this year will be accomplished fiddler player, MacDara Ó Raghallaigh, Portglenone’s queen of the banjo Brona Graham, from Connemara renowned melodeon player, Johnny Connolly and flute maestro, Marcus Hernon, fiddling legend, Antóin Mac Gabhann, Michael Curran brilliant young box player from Tyrone and masters of the Ulster singing tradition, Len Graham, Frances Rodgers and Mick Quinn as well as Cavan’s own renowned lilter and singer Seamus Fay. Events over the weekend include a Memorial Concert and official opening, Workshops on Fiddle, Banjo, Button Accordian, Tin Whistle and Singing. Street music from Gig Rig and Marching Band Parade, Pub Sessions, Singing and Storytelling session and an Oiche Cois Tine night with music, singing and dancing.
