NEW TRADITIONAL MUSIC GROUP GROG

The group was formed this year by well–known singer/musician Carmel Gunning and is very busy touring Ireland at the moment,  playing in Inisturk and Listowel in July and Gloucestershire, England in October. The members of the band are all established musicians such as Carmel Gunning, John Regan, Seamus O’ Kane and Joe Grady.

Carmel Gunning from Sligo town comes from Geevagh, Co. Sligo. She is an All Ireland Comhaltas and Scor Champion. She teaches music in Ireland and abroad and every August runs the Carmel Gunning Summer School Festival in Sligo. Sometimes she tutors MA and BA students at the University of Limerick. A composer of note, her compositions are being recorded by various artists and can be heard in sessions in America and France. She produced 5 CD’s – the latest ones being The Sligo Maid and Corran Hill.

The Boston Globe Review remarks on her virtuosic tin whistle playing “One of Gunnings strengths is her ability to spontaneously play creative variations on a tunes basic melody” while Comhaltas Review by Seamus Duffy states “Her ornamentation is uncanny, her variations unrivalled”.
John Regan is one of the better–known accordionists in Ireland for the past 30 years. He’s from Drumcliffe in North Sligo and resides in Dublin. An All Ireland Senior Champion at the Listowel Fleadh in 1970, John had previously won duet titles with fiddler Paddy Glacken. In 1972 he toured Britain with Liam O’ Flynn and Cathal McConnell to much acclaim and later toured with Comhaltas in America. He has two CD’s to his name, The Slopes of Benbulben and Let Down the Blade. John teaches at the College of Music in Dublin and was mostly influenced by Joe Burke and Finbar Dwyer.

Seamus O’Kane from Dungiven, Co. Derry, plays and makes Bodhrans. He travels widely at home and abroad, giving bodhran workshops at various festivals. Joe Grady, from Kilmovee, Co. Mayo plays fiddle, flute and pipes. He has played at many festivals at home and abroad including The Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in Canada. His playing is very much influenced by late great fiddle/flute player, Peter Horan from Gurteen, Co. Sligo.
