Despite the continuing austerity, anticipation is building for Féile Frank McGann 2013, which will be held in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon on October 11th, 12th, and 13th. While plans are being finalised, an exciting line–up of artistes, workshops, recitals and other events is promised for the weekend.

This niche festival, described by many as one of the best in the Country, has maintained a constant standard that others have sought to attain.

Musicians will again descend from Ireland and Britain as well as such far away places as Germany, China and Japan. Saturday 12th will see workshops held in a range of instruments, taught by some of the leading tutors in Ireland while on Friday 11th, the “Kitchen Sessions”, an idea conceived by the Féile Frank McGann team, will deliver yet another memorable night at this very special venue. With the kitchen fire lit, the lights down low and complementary glasses of wine, the atmosphere is one of warmth and intimacy – definitely an experience not to be missed! Saturday afternoon will see people gathering in town for the annual ‘Trip in the Merc’, a truly unique approach to remembering the character that was (and still is!) Frank McGann. The weekend will be rounded off on Sunday 13th with a Céilí Mór in the Percy French Hotel.

Féile Frank McGann was established to honour the memory of Frank McGann, a bodhran player and singer born in Lissalway, Co. Roscommon in 1923 and who sadly passed away in 2002. He was renowned throughout the length and breadth of Ireland within the traditional scene.

The weekend will be filled with sessions, planned and impromptu, all over Strokestown as the townspeople extend yet another warm welcome for true lovers of Trad.

More details on this year’s line–up in next month’s issue of Irish Music Magazine.
