New release from Michael Mc Cague

Due for general release in March is The Waylaid Man, the long awaited album of original compositions in the traditional idiom offered up by Michael Mc Cague. This highly individual and personal project sees the culmination of over a year’s composing, studio work and collaboration with some of the most inspiring and highly regarded musicians currently on the circuit.

The compositions cover the broad spectrum of reels, jigs, slides, barndances, polkas and an Eastern European styled set.

Solos and duets are delicately balanced with Michael being the ever present accompanist and arranger. Brian McGrath and Donal Mc Cague tease out some real old sounds and a never before heard pairing of Oisin Mac Diarmada and John McSherry appears in the mix!

The names John McSherry and Nollaig Casey will be instantly recognisable as the great pairing from Coolfin and they reconnect beautifully here on a couple of highly energetic tracks.

Tying it all together is Mc Cague, who has worked in a substantial manner with most of his guests in bands such as At First Light with McSherry, At The Racket with McGrath, Mac Diarmada as a guest with Téada, not forgetting his brother Dónal.

“Here we have a body of music by Michael Mc Cague that gives us an invaluable insight into his deeply personalised compositions. I have no doubt that this collection is going to take its place in traditional Irish music and remain valid for years to come” – John Carty.
