MUSICIANS IN THE PICTURE

Susan Hughes – Exhibition of Musicians of Ireland

www.shudesigns.com

Susan Hughes graduated from Belfast Art College in 2006. For the past two years she has worked full time as an artist attending residencies in Norway and Ireland. As a fiddle player she has been honoured to play tunes over the years with many of the musicians she has painted. As she draws their faces, hands and instruments she aims to capture some of their spirit with her ink and brush.

Learning music in the culturally rich area of Glencomkille, South West Donegal and in Norway’s Hardangerfjord, has given Susan a heightened awareness of the links between music and ‘place ‘, instilling in her a reverence for each note as a direct link to past human interactions and experiences. Hughes was recently commissioned to produce the artwork for traditional albums ‘Fiddle Music’ by Danny Diamond and ‘Caves of Cong’ by Josie Nugent and Brian Stafford. In February 2014 her highly acclaimed portrait exhibition ‘Quiet Peacemakers’ was launched at Belfast’s Assembly buildings at Stormont. An exhibition of her work, Musicians of Ireland went on display at Glor during the Ennis Trad Fest. Her exhibition runs in Ennis until January 3rd.
