Reeling them in at Ceol na Coille!

The Ceol na Coille Summer School in Letterkenny, County Donegal, has been a fast developer on the trad scene over the past four years and is expecting another big hike in numbers in 2015.

Running from Monday July 13th to Friday July 17th, Ceol na Coille is tucked in nicely between Willie Week and Drumshanbo. Accordionist and piper Paul Harrigan, the main organiser, says they’re putting together a big programme of classes, concerts and sessions this year. “We’ve got a wonderful base in the new Coláiste Ailigh in Letterkenny, perfect as our HQ for a great week’s music, song and fun,” he said.

Ceol na Coille is well–supported by the local trad music schools in Donegal and is attracting a lot more overseas visitors as word about the school spreads. This is leading to a big growth in night– time events, and 2015 will see a series of concerts and an expanded nightly session trail. So far an uilleann pipe concert has been pencilled in for the Tuesday night, and the exciting new band The Trí Tones are in on the Thursday night. Paul says there’ll be more announcements of gigs over the coming months.

The number of tutors is also expected to go up from last year’s 17, covering singing and all the main instruments, including fiddle, button accordion, piano accordion, flute, uilleann pipes, whistle, concertina, guitar, banjo, mandolin and harp. The levels are advanced, intermediate and beginners over nine years old. There’s also an introduction to Irish music for children from 6 – 9 years.
