Skerries Traditional Music Weekend

This year the 17th Skerries Traditional Music Weekend will take place from 18th-20th of May in the picturesque seaside town of Skerries situated in the North Fingal region of County Dublin. In 2018 Skerries will play host to a weekend packed with music, song and dance where leading artists will travel to Skerries and join with locals and visitors in a celebration of our unique Irish heritage. A great selection of top class individual players will be participating throughout the weekend on many levels including formal concerts, recitals, tutoring and pub sessions.

Artists such as Mary Bergin, Dermot Byrne, Michelle Mulcahy, Dermy Diamond, Mick O’Brien, Tara Diamond, Mairéad Casey, Conal Ó Gráda, to mention but a few! There will be great sessions during the weekend which will include a Singing Session, Slow Session for Adults and a Teenage Session aimed at providing an opportunity for young musicians to play together and sample the session atmosphere.

Local musician James O’Mahony will lead the way to some of the local schools accompanied by a team of musicians to perform and interact with the primary school students.  Skerries Traditional Music Weekend is proud to be involved in this Outreach Programme which over the years has nurtured a keen interest in traditional music among the younger members of the local community.

KGB, Paddy Keenan, Frankie Gavin & Dermot Byrne will perform on Friday night at 8pm in The Little Theatre venue. Music and Dancing workshops will take place on Saturday with a variety of instruments to choose from including ‘Harp’ as well as the continuation of the ‘special beginner Tin Whistle Class’ for Adults with tutor Andrea Gallagher.  Dancing workshop will cover both Sean Nós and Set Dancing.

On Saturday evening there will be an illustrated presentation by Máire O’Keeffe on ‘All Things Sliabh Luachra’, with music by Paudie O’Connor, Aoife Ní Chaoimh, Con Fada Ó Drisceoil and Conal Ó Gráda, starting at 7.00pm. Admission is FREE.

Skerries Traditional Music Weekend is delighted to welcome Dermot Byrne & Yvonne Casey on Saturday evening 19th May when they will be performing at Rockabill Restaurant at 8.00pm. Early booking is advised by contacting Rockabill Restaurant at 01 8495001 as the numbers admitted will be limited.

Calling dancers of all ages get your dancing shoes on and dance the night away with The Kilfenora Céilí Band. This much anticipated event is sponsored by The Moriarty Group and will be held on Saturday night at 9.00pm in Skerries Community Centre. €10.00 Listeners very welcome – Bring a friend!

The Sunday morning recital in Skerries Mills is hosted by Mary Bergin who leads her fellow tutors in an early morning tune.
