Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal for Monaghan Piper and Dublin Harpist

Monaghan piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and Dublin harpist Oisín Morrison were the winners of the Seán Ó Riada gold medal in the concert final which took place in Cork on Friday night.

The winners were each presented with a gold medal specially-designed by Cashel goldsmith Pádraig Ó Mathúna and a cheque for €1250 at the event in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork.

Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn is an accomplished musician has been playing the pipes since he was 9 years of age, when he started with The Armagh Pipers Club.  He has been playing and touring professionally since 1995, with bands and as a solo performer, and the music has taken him to Europe, USA, Asia, Africa, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.  He released the album ‘Ceol is Píob’ with his wife, singer Stephanie Makem, in 2008.  He has presented TV and radio programmes for TG4, RTÉ and BBC, and his music has been featured in the soundtrack for two films.

Pipers and harpists compete for Seán Ó Riada gold medal

An astrophysicist with an interest in experimental music, a young man who keeps and shows hens, and an award-winning Scottish harpist will be amongst those playing in the final of the Seán Ó Riada gold medal competition which was launched by broadcaster Dáithí Ó Sé in Cork this week.  The concert final will be broadcast live from Cork on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta on Friday 18 January.

There will be fifteen musicians – pipers and harpists – playing in the final in the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, on Friday 18 January at 7pm, which will also be webcast on www.cuireadhchunceoil.ie.

The 8th annual Temple Bar TradFest takes place in Dublin later this month with events scheduled in various venues. Having gained a reputation as the one of the biggest and best traditional Irish music and culture festivals in Ireland, the festival is now a firm fixture on the national and international festival calendar.

As part of the festival, IMRO will be hosting a series of traditional music showcases at the New Theatre, Temple Bar on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th January in an effort to highlight the high quality of emerging artists in Traditional music in Ireland.

Grammy Award Nominees for Shannonside Winter Music Weekend

Christy Moore and Declan Sinnott have announced they will perform a very special January Benefit Concert in aid of the Young Homeless on Tuesday, 8th January 2013 at Vicar St. This benefit concert is to acknowledge and support over 30 years of work by The Peter McVerry Trust. Peter McVerry Trust supports young homeless people to break the cycle of homelessness and move towards independent living through the provision of a continuum of care services. All proceeds from the concert go to the Peter McVerry Trust.
