Northern Ireland on show at the Smithsonian

Paul Flynn headed up an extensive mission from Northern Ireland to the USA in early July for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Not just musicians but many other exponents of folk culture from storytellers to farmers, sports and games, trades and occupations were represented.

Donal Lunny on Film

The programme for the 8th Belfast Cathedral Quarter Festival which runs from 26th-30th September is out now and it promises to be a right good few days of fun, with a mixture of Irish and American folk artists dominating the bill and there’s a chili food festival running alongside the music to get you into the Cajun spirit.

NUI Galway award Honorary Doctorate to world-renowned Folklorist

World-renowned folklorist, Mr Tom Munnelly received the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature from NUI Galway in recognition of his lifetime of service to the collection and publication of folksong and folklore in Ireland. Mr Munnelly was honoured at the University’s summer conferring ceremony on Tuesday, 19th June, 2007.

New appointments at TG4

Pól Ó Gallchóir has been appointed Chief Executive of TG4 and Pádhraic Ó Ciardha has been appointed Deputy Chief Executive following the public competition for these posts that took place recently. Both appointees had previously been in the roles of Ceannasaí and Leascheannasaí TG4, respectively. The new posts and titles were created and publicly advertised following on the Ministerial order that established TG4 as a separate statutory entity from 1st April, 2007.
