O’Carolan Harp Festival Celebrates 33 years

Harpers and Traditional Musicians are expected in large numbers to the picturesque Village of Keadue on the shores of Lough Meelagh for the 33rd. O’Carolan Harp Festival which takes place from July 29th.. to August 1st. The Summer School in Traditional Music, Song and Dance precedes the Festival from July 24th. To July 29th. Students attending the classes at the Summer School can avail of the following workshops in Harp, Flute, Tin Whistle, Fiddle, Banjo, Button Accordion, Concertina, Bodhran, Traditional Singing, Set Dancing and Sean nos Dancing. A number of Instrumental Music Competitions, Ceilis and Lectures will also be held.

A project has been launched to help in securing Hamish Henderson’s papers for the nation. Hamish Henderson, a Scottish poet, soldier, pacifist, political activist, songwriter and the leading folklorist of his generation also co-founded the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh in 1951, which has gone on to record 12,000 hours worth of oral tradition reflecting the lives and cultures of the Scottish people.

Free Summer Youth Traditional Arts Concerts in Killarney
Spraoi Chiarraí is a Killarney based Irish Traditional Music, Song & Dance performance collective presenting the finest young local performers. They had great success over the last six summers. The first of this seasons concerts was on Saturday, June 11th at St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, Killarney. The talented Kelleher Family from Fossa, opened the proceedings followed by a fiddle duet Padraig Creedon from Glenflesk and his partner Catherine Carey from Kinsale along with Director/Producer Tim O’Shea on guitar and vocals. Open to all, this family entertainment is sponsored this year by Killarney Arts (Town Council) Main Sponsor, Kerry County Arts Office and Killarney Chamber of Commerce (print sponsor). These free Concerts will take place in two venues in the town.

The ITMA is curating an exhibition of Scrapbook Images from the Ballad Boom, 1950’s–1970’s. The ballad boom, was a period of about twelve years which began at the end of the 1950’s. There was a movement in Ireland for the singing of (mostly) Irish songs in English by ballad groups: small vocal groups accompanying themselves with guitar, banjo and mandolin, and sometimes including a whistle player or other melody instrumentalist. This was the Irish expression of a wider folk movement where mainly English speaking people rediscovered their own folk music and began to make their own music for themselves in what would become known as the folk revival, it was anti-Tin Pan alley and anti-commercial in its initial stages.
