CAVAN MAKES IT THREE IN A ROW

www.fleadh2011cavan.ie

September 10th was a day for celebration in Monkstown, Dublin when the 2012 All-Ireland Fleadh was awarded for the third year in succession to Cavan. Both Sligo and Ennis were bidding to host next year’s Fleadh, but, when the votes were finally cast by the 29 member committee Cavan came out as the victors. The winning margin was like this year’s GAA Football final, just one in the difference and Senator Labhras Ó Murchú said that the vote was unusually close this year because the competing towns had put such detailed proposals forward. He congratulated the Cavan Committee and said that it was heartening that CEO Jack Keyes Keyes as a public representative was prepared to take on the role of Fleadh Chairman. The Senator also paid tribute to Martin Donohoe who he said “is the logo for the Fleadh Cheoil”.

About the Musicians
Michael Cooney (Uilleann Pipes)
It seems like Michael Cooney was destined to play the pipes. He was raised in a family of Highland pipers from Co. Tipperary. His father, Martin, and his uncles played in the Sean Tracey Pipe Band in Littleton that his grandfather and great uncles founded. Irish dancing and singing also ran in the family. At a young age, Michael took a liking to the whistle. His father, eager to expose him to as much music as possible, began driving Michael all over the country for instruction.

Saturday 17th September.
Triskel Christchurch, 8pm.
Tickets €20/17.

Iarla O’Lionaird tours to mark the release his new solo album Foxlight on Realworld Records. Foxlight shimmers with versatility. While it is rooted in certain traditions, it is also unclassifiable and refuses to be located in one genre or another. It’s also one of Ó Lionáird’s most organic, naturalistic records to date. Instrumentation and layers are embedded in each song, but ultimately it’s about Ó Lionáird’s exquisite, sonically unique voice.
