Féile Patrick Byrne

Since 2007 Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann have organised a weekend of traditional music workshops, sessions and concerts in honour of Patrick Byrne, the 19th century harper who was the first Irish traditional musician ever photographed. Called the Féile Patrick Byrne this community festival is held on the weekend before Easter (March 29th – April 1st) in and around Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan.
Topping the bill is At the Racket which features the considerable talents of John Carty (fiddle and banjo), Brian McGrath (piano, tenor guitar and banjo), Seamus O’Donnell (flute, saxophone and vocals) and Michael McCague (guitar, tenor guitar and bouzouki).

Applications for Meitheal Summer School 2012 before March 16th!

Meitheal 2012 will run from July 16th to 20th in Villiers School, Limerick.  A stellar cohort of tutors is being lined up, many of them from overseas. Reaction to Meitheal 2011 was extremely positive and many students highlight the Finale Concert, and the appearance at the National Concert Hall as being unforgettable experiences.

Mayo musician Tim McHugh wins Seán Ó Riada gold medal

Flute player Tim McHugh from Newport in Mayo was announced as winner of the Seán Ó Riada gold medal and prize money of €2500 on Friday night. He was amongst 15 traditional flute and whistle players who took to the stage in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Friday 13 January to compete in the final. The judges on the night were renowned musicians Mary Bergin and Michael Tubridy, and they were joined by Matt Molloy via Skype from 1500 miles away in the Canary Islands.

The Temple Bar TradFest, Dublin’s biggest and best Irish music and culture festival, will take place for the 7th year running on the 25th – 29th January 2012. Once again Temple Bar TradFest offers a wealth of music within the very walkable confines of Dublin’s Cultural Quarter.

As part of the festival, IMRO will be running 2 showcase concerts which will take place in The New Theatre in Temple Bar.

Scoil Acla, Achill Island, Co. Mayo

The annual Scoil Acla summer school takes place on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Scoil Acla is Irelands oldest summer school, originally founded in 1910 and relaunched in 1985.

Scoil Acla follows the usual format of daily music classes which run from Monday to Saturday on the following instruments, accordion, banjo, flute, concertina, fiddle, harp, tin whistle, uileann pipes and bodhrán with beginners, intermediate and advanced students being catered for on all instruments. Other workshops available are creative writing, basket weaving, dancing and a course on Gaeilg’ Acla, the Achill dialect of Irish. Through out the week we have recitals, poetry readings, creative writing readings, indoor and outdoor concerts, sessions, walks, talks and much more.
