DEATH OF BOSTON’S IRISH MUSIC STALWART
LARRY REYNOLDS 1932 ~ 2012
Fiddle player Larry Reynolds has passed away on October 3rd in Boston. Larry was born in Ahascragh, County Galway into a large family, he was one of thirteen children. He began fiddle lessons at age 10. Before leaving Ireland to come to Boston, he played with many céili bands. In Boston he was elected the first chairman of the Hanafin-Cooley branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann which he founded. We had the pleasure of meeting Larry personally when the IMM team visited Boston College and also heard Larry play on many occasions in America including a visit he made to the Milwaukee Irish Fest.
The Hanafin Cooley branch posted this short tribute to their founding father: “He worked tirelessly to promote and share his love for Irish culture through music and friendship. Condolences to his wife Phyllis and family, as well as to his extended family of musicians, dancers and community members that extends across the globe. He will be sadly missed, and it’s safe to say that his like will not be seen again. “
Writing on Facebook, his nephew Pat expressed this heartfelt tribute to Larry - “Larry Reynolds has passed away, though his legacy and love for the music will live on in all of us who played with, danced to or just enjoyed his company. To all who learned from and played with the man, condolences. To those who had the pleasure of playing with him for almost 45 years, as I have, keep the love alive, and pass it on. RIP Larry and thank you for some of the best times of my life.”

RAYLENE RANKIN RIP
Raylene Rankin from Mabou Cape Breton has died after a long fight with cancer at the age of 52.
She battled 3 bouts of cancer and was in remission last year when she began work on her first solo album for 7 years. That CD All The Diamonds was released in 2012 and took its title from the Spring flowers which Rankin said were like ‘little diamonds’ , spots of spring hope after a long winter battle against the disease.
The Rankin Family was together for ten years and sold more than 2 million records, won six Juno awards, three Canadian Country Music Awards and 15 East Coast Music Awards.
ANTOINETTE McKENNA RIP
The well-known harp player has died. Antoinette was the sister of Ireland’s most famous whistle player Mary Bergin and the wife of piper Joe McKenna. Joe and Antoinette recorded and performed together and were extremely popular on the Dublin trad circuit and internationally.
Irish Music Magazine would like to offer condolences to Joe and the Bergin family on their sad loss.
NIAMH IS LOOKING FOR FUNDING
Niamh Ni Charra has a very interesting project and she is looking for funding to bring it to fruition. She is trying to raise the necessary finance via www.Fundit.ie.
Niamh told us “In 1928 Kerry musician and composer Terry “Cuz” Teahan emigrated to Chicago where he lived and continued to play and pass on tunes, until his death in 1989. Prior to leaving Ireland he had been taught music by the Sliabh Luachra legend Padraig O’ Keeffe, and he was responsible for many Irish American musicians learning this style of music, the repertoire of this area, and many of his own compositions. In fact many local tunes would have been lost were it not for Cuz. On his last visit home before he died he saw me play (I was very young!) and on his return to Chicago he made a tape for me of his own tunes as well as some of these old tunes that had been forgotten. That tape is now 25–years–old and a prized possession but I feel it should also be shared. Therefore for my fourth album I’d like to make a tribute to him, playing his compositions that he often never got credit for, along with a sample of the old tunes he helped preserve. This is being carried out with the full backing and delight of his family, and to make the album extra special I have invited many well–known guest musicians from both Kerry and Chicago to join me, all of whom knew and were influenced by Cuz. This is a celebration of the traditional music style of Sliabh Luachra and the wonderful character that was “Cuz” Teahan. Guest musicians include Seamus Begley, Liz Carroll, Jimmy Keane and Donal Murphy.”
