Ireland’s wettest summer for years was awash with outdoor music festivals, but the folks at Sligo Live, now in it’s third year, have moved the gigs indoors and have put together a brilliant selection music and fun over the Halloween Bank holiday. Sligo Live kicks off on Wednesday 24th October and runs over six days until Monday 29th October 2007 in a selection of Sligo venues. HUNDREDS OF DANCERS PARTICIPATE IN ‘SIEGE OF ENNIS’ ON FINAL DAY OF MILWAUKEE IRISH FEST

Milwaukee, USA, 19th August 07 - Over 400 people from all over North
America and Ireland danced the ‘The Siege of Ennis’ at the world’s
largest Irish festival today. The Céilí Siege was held at the
Milwaukee Irish Fest in Wisconsin where over 140,000 festival goers
have congregated this week for a celebration of Irish music, food,
history, heritage, dance, sports and culture.

Today’s session was hosted by a tourism delegation from County Clare,
which has travelled to the Milwaukee in recognition of the fact that
The Banner County has been named at the central theme of this year’s
Fest.

PADDY KEENAN IS PIPING UP SUPPORT

World renowned uilleann piper helps raise cash for Cork family.

Tuesday 14th August saw Paddy Keenan in Martha’s Vineyard in the USA
where he performed at a fund raising concert to help defray medical
costs for a young girl from Cork who was badly burnt in an accident in

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB FOR SLIGO LIVE

The legends of Cuban music, Buena Vista Social Club, will headline the Sligo Live festival this October Bank Holiday weekend. Their 1997 album sold in excess of 5 million copies, placing them among the world’s best known roots performers. It’s taken some time to establish but students can now apply to do the first year of the BA in Music & Dance from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick in The Shaylyn Centre, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim. This first year is equivalent to a FETAC Level 6 Diploma. Importantly the course is also an Access Programme that will allow qualifying students apply to join in at the second year of the BA, Degree in Limerick.

TOMMY MAKEM (RIP)

Tommy Makem one of the giants of the folk revival passed away on
Wednesday August 1st 2007.

His work with the Clancy Brothers in the 1950s and 60’s was truly historic,
capturing the zeitgeist of the emerging folk revival of which that band was
in the van, his subsequent career, his many recording and his live
appearances established his name and his music in the hearts of
generations of Irish music fans, particularly in the USA where he was
based for many years.
